Artist of the Month August 2011 - The Leaping Lizards

This month we interview Donna from award-winning Folk/Australiana/Roots veterans The Leaping Lizards.

Band/Artist name:

The Leaping Lizards

Where did your band name come from?

We were looking for something Australiana, lively & fun, it suited us down to
the ground.

Who’s in the band? How did you meet and when did you get together?

The band has had a few incarnations over the years. Presently Ron Dimmick, Donna Reynolds & Hugh Curtis

What’s your musical background? When did you start playing?

We all started playing as kids & teenagers

Has your music evolved since you first began playing together?

Of course, music & life is a creative process which is constantly changing.

What is your creative process?

Inspiration happens at random times, life has to fit around when it happens.

How would you describe your music to people?

Folk Revival, Australian Heritage Roots Music

Does your music convey a message?

We do a lot of instrumentals so its more the feeling of our gigs that is
remembered.

Who are your musical influences?

After 27 years – we are an influence!

How do you promote your music?

Radio airplay, interviews, magazine articles & ads, live gigs, social
networking, festivals, creating community events but basicly its all to do with
relationships.

What live performance experience have you had?

We've had it all....except a cruise ship....yeah we'd like to do a cruse ship!

Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you have a set play list?

No set play list unless its a corporate gig. Tracks off whatever current album
we have at the time, we do every gig & folks always ask for songs they've
heard us do before.

What has been your biggest highlight in the music industry?

Depends whether we win tonight at the Qld Music Awards!!

Winning the Golden Fiddle Award at Tamworth in Jan and Best National Band
at the Victorian Awards in Feb this year (2011).

What’s something interesting that’s ever happened to your band?

Putting our last collective band bucks on the chocolate wheel after a gig at the
Treasury Casino and winning $300.

What has been your biggest challenge in the music industry?

Since 1984 – keeping up with technology change and structual change within
the industry itself. In 1984 getting signed to a major label was the career
focus, indie bands were nothing – now indie bands are everything!

What are your long-term goals as a musician?

To remain one.

Are you planning to release a new album anytime soon?

Yes, working on one now.

Do you have any tips for music marketing?

Yes find Bob Baker on the net and read everything he writes.

Where can we hear your tunes online?
