Artist of the Month Jan 2012 - The Mill Servants

Band/Artist name:
The Mill Servants
Where did your band name come from?
Well we are slaves at a gold mine so The Mill Servants seemed appropriate at the time.
Who’s in the band? How did you meet and when did you get together?
Myself Conan Chapman and Kent Bradshaw, We met at work and started jamming not long after.
What’s your musical background? When did you start playing?
We both started playing guitar at the age of ten and neither of us had a lot of family/musical background but have both been in a few bands previous to now.
Has your music evolved since you first began playing together?
Yes certainly, the beauty of music is it is always evolving, new styles, new structures and new sounds all together.
What is your creative process?
Normally it starts with guitar riffs then lyrics. I believe a guitar part can tell you what the song should be about.
How would you describe your music to people?
Easy listening, relaxed and not over complicated.
Does your music convey a message?
Our music is based on our life experiences. Whether it is an up or a down, I guess our message is to always stay positive for a good outcome.
Who are your musical influences?
Tool, Metallica, JBT, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, The Beatles. The list is far too long!
How do you promote your music?
We are truly at the start of promoting ourselves. Facebook/triple J Unearthed is the only angle so far but we are concentrating on getting gigs and our faces out there.
What live performance experience have you had?
As the Mill Servants not a lot, but both had a lot of experience with previous bands in Adelaide.
Which songs do you perform most frequently?
Do you have a set play list? We like to play all of them if we can and prefer our original stuff than playing covers. We have favourites that are always left until last but I guess it all depends on the crowd mood.
What has been your biggest highlight in the music industry?
Opening up for Bonjah, The Joe Kings and Daniel Lee Kendall at Pinjarra W.A, for Bonjah’s new album tour.
If you had a time travel machine where would you go?
Definitely travel to the Woodstock festival!!!
What has been your biggest challenge in the music industry?
I think the promotional side of it, trying to find the right path to getting our music out there.
What are your long-term goals as a musician?
To continue writing and performing and, like most, to be discovered in the wonderful world of Australian music.
Are you planning to release a new album anytime soon?
We need to concentrate on playing and getting our faces out there first and then recording time after. Maybe mid next year, hopefully!
Do you have any tips for music marketing?
Your brain is a sponge, so take in all advice and use what is necessary to get where you want to be!
Where can we hear your tunes online?
