Austep Music Interview with Jillian Jake (GIGLAUNCH)

Business name:

Gig Launch Pty Ltd

Location:

Australia

Website:

www.giglaunch.com.au

Short summary of business:

We connect artists to promoters and find artists for gigs and events that promoters are hosting. We are an Australian online booking agency with many gig opportunities world-wide, whether it be an Australian festival looking for artists, a CD compilation looking for songs, a Canadian film looking for scores, a Japanese cruise boat looking for acts or an international song contest; we have artists looking for gigs and promoters looking for artists.

What’s your history in the industry?

I have been in the industry for 30 years first as a songwriter and artist touring and recording internationally, then as a publisher, promoter, manager, judge, song evaluator and event coordinator right through to hosting a TV show in Nashville, USA.

How long has Gig Launch been around?

Gig Launch went live in April of this year and already has a database of over 50’000 artists.

Why did you start Gig Launch?

I was sick of Australians having to use an international booking agency to submit to gigs in Australia. I feel Australia has its own music industry and should have its own online booking agency, thus Gig Launch was born. I also thought it would be great for overseas artists to be able to come and visit our beautiful shores and submit to our opportunities.

How many hours per week do you spend on your business?
The staff at Gig Launch and myself work 6 days a week.

What advertising methods do you use?

Internet, newsletters, press.

What are your future goals?

To give artists a simple way to get their music through to the people who count in the music industry, furthering their career.

Do you have any tips for people starting out in the industry?

To know and have empathy with each party you deal with. For example, I have been an artist, songwriter, recording artist, manager, song evaluator, songplugger, a judge of many competitions, promoter of events… so I know of the problems associated with each of these and the emotions and turmoil that they can bring. Knowing this enables me to offer great compassion for both the promoter and the artist thus helping to understand the needs of both. Really try and get an understanding of your market.
