Short summary of business:
Creative industries and youth engagement.
We believe that we all have natural talents that tends to be unrecognised, indeed stifled by society and the education system. We aim to create opportunities for all participants of our workshops through the use of the creative industries.
What are the creative industries?
There are a number of definitions of the creative industries, one that we particularly align to is:
“those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.”
What’s your history in the industry?
I started Dubwise Productions (an urban music record label) back in 1994. We first produced Jungle records, although since 1996 we have only released roots and dub reggae tracks.
How long has Champion Sound been around?
We formed in 2007
Do you have any interesting stories that have taken place?
Due to the success of one of our music making and events program in a remote community in Cape York, we were asked to tailor the program to focus on helping the participants to focus on anger management issues and helping them develop strategies for “staying cool”.
This demonstrated the real ways that creativity can positively affect lives.
Why did you start Champion Sound?
Through my experience with urban music in the UK, I could see the positive effects that this music had on bringing people together and providing opportunities particularly for young people.
Soon after arriving in Australia, I met my business partner (John Lumley) and decided that a mobile sound system would be a good way of taking music to communities throughout our region.
What are your future goals?
To engage with, and help as many communities as we can throughout Australia.
What tips do you have for “making it” in the creative industries?
Believe in yourself and persevere.
