Music Business Interview- Everyday Formula

Interview by Austep Music, May 2011

Business name:

Everyday Formula

Location:

Formerly Brisbane. Recently re-located to the Gold Coast.

Business website:

Short summary of business:

Music marketing, artist management and more. We’re generally seen as an indie label but we’re far from it. We develop acts from very early on, we license established acts from around the world, we manage artists and we work as somewhat of a touring company for overseas acts as well. We try to nurture the act from wherever we come into the picture right through the entire course of their career.

What’s your history in the industry?

Like most, I started out playing in various bands. I learnt to record, developed my skills, ran a studio for a few years, was asked to manage some local bands, had some success there then decided to take some time out to find where I felt I fit into the scene. After 12 months away from it all, Everyday Formula was born.

How long has EDF been around?

A little over 3 years.

Why did you start EDF?

Too many great acts had no idea how to develop and brand their music. They wrote great songs, put on killer live shows then eventually split because they weren’t getting the recognition they’d hoped for. I wanted to get in early with the ones that I believed had the goods and assist them in getting their music to a global standard and a global audience.

Was finding start up capital difficult?

When starting this business, I made a decision early on not to borrow money. I wanted it to grow organically, so to speak. It has probably taken a little longer to grow without having any start up capital but I’m glad I did it this way.

How many hours per week do you spend on your business?

Oh, how many hours are there in a week? Take off 2 or 3 hours a night for sleep and that’s about where we’re at. Haha. There’s a lot of time that goes into keeping EF moving forward.

What are your favourite parts of your business?

Everyday is something different. One day I’m on tour, the next I’m in the studio. There’s never a dull day and never a reason to question why I’m doing this. How many jobs are like that?

What are your future goals?

We’re just about to introduce the ‘third stage’ of the business. New website, new logo (designed by Erik Ohlsson of Millencolin), a complete re-branding and a whole heap of new features. It also sees the end to a lot of the basic services we used to offer. The next 2-3 years is about putting EF and our current roster on a global stage. We’re penning new partnership agreements with some fantastic companies at the moment and we see this as our key to rapid growth without the risk.

What tips do you have for “making it” in the creative industries?

It’s great to reach for the stars. I strongly encourage it. However, be sure to build a solid foundation to stand on when doing so. If university is an option, pursuing a marketing or communications type degree might be a great option. When your music is ready for a larger audience, you’ll have the skills required to get it out to the people. If formal education isn’t an option, learn all you can from those around you. Read, make phone calls, observe those that appear to be having some level of success and learn from them.

What’s the best way to contact you?
