Compilation CD FAQ
Q. Do I give up any rights to my music?
No. By submitting your song you are simply extending us a non-exclusive license to distribute your music. You keep 100% copyright.
Q. What if my music contains samples?
If your music contains samples, it is up to you to ensure you have permission to use them.
Q. Who masters the music?
Daniel Fournier A Tonmeister (someone who has detailed theoretical & practical knowledge of virtually all aspects of sound recording) from the University of Surrey (UK), Daniel Fournier came to Australia from France to take up the position of Music Technology Convener and Senior Lecturer in Music Technology from 1983 until 1999 at the QLD Conservatorium of Music. In 1991 Daniel, created the Digital Archives Network. D.A.N. set out to offer a variety of audio services from recording, engineering, editing and compiling through to producing, pre-mastering, mastering, duplicating and archiving. With vast experience in acoustics, audio engineering techniques, hardware, recording, computer science, mathematics, software, physiques and Sonology, Daniel has over 25 years of experience. He offers musical and technical expertise, well trained ears and in his words, "a faithful documentation of the sounds conceived by artists". His clients include Sony Tokyo, ABC radio, and various Australian and International artists.
Q. How long does it take?
From the moment we get all tracks paid for and uploaded, it takes 3-6 weeks to get the compilation mastered, artwork designed, printed, distributed etc. It takes 3-4 months to fill each compilation.
Q. What is “Open Submission”?
There are 2 types of Submission.
1. You can submit to a specific upcoming compilation release (EG "Vol.7")
2. “Open Submission” is where you submit a song, but not to a specific compilation. We then contact you as soon as an appropriate compilation theme is scheduled.
Q. Which radio stations, digital stores etc will my music be sent to?
All Compilation CDs are uploaded to 100+ digital stores (iTunes etc.) around the world. These include:

Australia-wide promotion: An electronic press kit with a free download of the album is sent to 100's of contacts including record labels, blogs, managers, licensing coordinators, producers, street press and more. Key contacts are also sent copies of the CD, including Triple J, The Blurb, Rolling Stone, Junior Mag, Music Feeds, Mushroom, EMI, Sony, Warner and Universal. We send you a list of key contacts who have received the album. If someone wants to work with you as a result of being on the Compilation we introduce them to deal directly with you.
50 CDs are posted to radio stations around Australia, targeted to match genre/content. We give you the contact details of these stations to follow up.
Q. How many copies of the compilation will be produced?
The exact number of CDs varies from project to project, however the minimum is 1,000. You will be posted 25 copies if you select Standard inclusion, or 75 copies of you select Deluxe inclusion.
Q. Can I have a discount if my song is already mastered?
Unfortunately not. We still need to do a final touch-up so that all songs on the CD flow together. Anyway, then you can say you've worked with world-famous Daniel Fournier! We prefer you to send us an unmastered, uncompressed version of your track.
Q. What is a WAV?
WAV files are large, uncompressed audio files. The Mac version of WAV is called AIFF.
Q. How many artists are included on each CD?
18 in total. On each CD there are 16 paying artists and 2 free spots.
Q. How much does it Cost?
Submitting songs for consideration is free.
If you are accepted you will then be asked to pay the inclusion fee.
You will then be posted 25-75 copies of the CD which can be sold to make back your inclusion fee and more.

Q. Do I need an invitation to be included on a compilation?
No. Anyone can submit to a compilation CD.
Q. How will I know my music has been distributed?
We will email you regular progress updates, as well as a copy of the electronic press release, and a list of all key labels, radio stations and other contacts we’ve sent it to. Any feedback we receive is passed onto you. We also post you 25-75 copies of the CD, and whenever we pay you royalties you receive a detailed statement.
Q. What if my song is already on some of the digital stores?
If your song is already available through one of the digital stores (e.g. iTunes), it will simply appear twice as we’ll assign the re-mastered version a new digital barcode (ISRC). More promotion for you!
Q. How much do I get paid and when?
Austep Music compilation CDs are about promotion, not selling CDs. Our purpose is to get your music into the right hands & give you a professional portfolio item to further your career. However, fans can purchase your music from any of our digital stores around the world (100% net royalties to YOU). Royalties are paid each 6 months provided your balance exceeds $25.
You keep 100% profit from the 25-75 CDs we post you.
Q. How do I make my money back straight away?
You will be posted 25-75 free copies of the compilation CD. Sell these to make all your money back and more. When you run out you can buy additional CDs at a discounted rate.
